Program Schedule:

July 6th, theme: Tanbata / the Star Festival

(1) Read (for elder students) or listen to (for younger students)
the Tanabata (the Star festival) legend and know why people
make wishes to the stars.
(2) Summarize the story and talk about how they feel about the story.
Write the summary and opinions in a short essay.
(3) Discuss what they would like to wish upon the stars. Write their
wishes on the Tanzaku (special paper to write wishes on at Tanabata),
make Origami-decorations for the bamboo tree, and enjoy the
Tanabata atmosphere.
(4) Sing the Tanabata song.

July 13th, theme: Summer Vacation

(1) Review of last week: Report to the class what
they wished for and why.
(2) Talk about the students' plans for the summer.
(3) Make an Enikki (picture diary) about last week's
Tanabata Festival. Other activities.

<assignments> Write Enikki (picture diaries). / Read one of the
assigned books and write a review.

August 3rd, theme: Summer Festival 1

(1) Present one of the Enikki from the assignments.
(Read each other's Book reviews)
(2) Read a story based on summer in Japan and discuss
the image of Japanese summer.
(3) Learn about Japanese summer festivals.
Through the introduction of words related to
what people wear, eat, and do (play with) at festivals,
talk about what they like or are interested in.
(4) Decide who will be in charge of each festival boothes.

<assignments> Write Enikki./ Prepare for the summer festival
(ex. yukata, uchiwa, make things with Origami etc.)

August 10th, theme: Summer Festival 2

(1) Prepare for the festival. (During preparation, students are
expected to explain how to make things/food, or how to
play games to each other)
(2) Enjoy the festival! (We would appreciate the parents' cooperateion
at the festival, thank you)
(3) Make a report of what they did and how they felt about the
summer festival.
